The U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) is the premier biodefense laboratory for the United States Department of Defense (DoD). Torcon was part of a joint venture team with Manhattan Construction responsible for construction of a new replacement facility at Fort Detrick. Research conducted in this facility will help increase understanding of biological threats and the threats of emerging diseases to military personnel and US citizens.

The new facility is the world’s largest high containment facility, with 931,000 sq. ft. of constructed area. Programs include BSL-2, BSL-3 and BSL-4 laboratories, specialty core laboratories, and lab support areas; as well as dedicated Veterinary Medicine offices and ABSL-2, ABSL-3 and ABSL-4 labs and support spaces. Much of the work is conducted in biosafety cabinets, using alpha and beta airtight containment locking ports for research material movement. Support equipment includes MRI machines and CT Scanners, with lower risk operations conducted through virology, cell culture, bacteriology, toxicology and PCR amplification studies of DNA.

The new building also provides a headquarters wing with administrative and research staff offices, building operations, logistics and a large conference and training center.

Facility support includes decontamination equipment; tunnel washers and ultrasonic cleaners; and closed/isolated piping to protect exposure of infectious material to the environment. Clean utility systems feature an automatic watering system, RO water, breathing air with umbilicals to airtight suits, and HEPA filter containment on HVAC and plumbing exhaust systems.
