Torcon was construction manager for the Two River Theatre Company’s new state-of-the-art theater in Red Bank. The theatre was designed by the architectural firm of H3 (formerly Hardy, Holzman and Pfeiffer and now the independent performing arts studio of Arquitectonica).

The heart of the 47,000-square-foot building is a masonry-clad 349-seat experimental theater. Its modest thrust stage allows for a range of dramatic productions, while a large proscenium provides a flexible environment for scenic design. A free-standing seating configuration provides an intimate space for both the audience and performers. Technically sophisticated, the theater has a full fly tower, 60 line sets, and an extensive catwalk system that offers multiple lighting positions.

In addition to the auditorium, a 2,500-square-foot, 99-seat rehearsal room, named for Marion Huber, doubles as a performance space or as a venue for pre- and post-performance events, readings, experimental works, and classes. This room has full sound isolation.

The two-story glass and timber lobby acts as the theatre’s marquee and is capped with undulation steel roof panels. A richly patterned carpet adorns a polished concrete floor, defining a series of lounging areas. The box office, vestibule, and concession stand are contained in individual volumes, clad in glazed tile. An upper mezzanine provides access to the auditorium balcony and a VIP room. Atop the lobby and wrapping the building’s primary facades are standing seam zinc panels.

In addition to performance space, the new facility provides sound and lighting maintenance shops, props preparation room, crafts shop, costume shop, two 12-person dressing rooms, two “star” dressing rooms, Green room, wardrobe room/laundry, coffee bar, VIP lounge, and administrative offices.
