The new four-story building added 50 critical care beds and 60 Level IIIC NICU beds in large, private rooms. It also features a dentistry suite and physical therapy and provides a new main entrance to the hospital complex. The lobby’s design includes a floor-to-ceiling mosaic of hand-placed marbles, a grand curtain wall, and architectural canopy for patients and visitors. A second helipad was also built for direct access to the new critical care spaces.
As part of the program’s initial phase of work, Torcon constructed an additional operating room in the main hospital. Special precautions were taken to ensure no disruptions to the existing Operating Suites. Sound and vibration were primary concerns, so construction was performed during off hours. The new OR is serviced by a new rooftop air handling and HEPA unit. Torcon also completed renovations of existing clinic space at the connection points with the tower.
Another phase of work at St. Christopher’s was construction of a new two-story, 30,000 sq. ft. Center for the Urban Child, a community-focused primary care initiative designed to address the issues that contribute to health disparities in children and their families throughout Philadelphia. Spacious exam and consultation rooms allow children and their families to receive medical treatment and social service support together.
