Torcon was CM for a new 183,000 sq. ft. Critical Care Building. The five-story facility features Adult and Pediatric Emergency Departments, surgical suites with, pre- and post-operative areas, four critical care units, and a rooftop Medivac accessible helistop.

The critical care units include Cardiac Care Unit/Open Heart Cardiac Care Unit; Surgical Intensive Care Unit; and the Medical Intensive Care Unit, and have a total of 56 new private rooms for patients. Eighty-eight separate treatment areas are provided along with 12 advanced systems-integrated operating theaters, pre- and post-operative areas, and a dedicated surgical waiting area. St. Joe’s is a state-designated Level 1 trauma hospital, and the new rooftop helipad accommodates larger medical helicopters. The ED area features an ambulance and mobile intensive care vestibule to handle multiple vehicles simultaneously.

In addition to the Critical Care Building, Torcon added an 1,100-car, seven-story precast concrete structure, totaling 370,000 sq. ft. with three elevators. The project was completed under a design/build contract and is located adjacent to the Medical Center’s main entrance. The garage includes a single story, 20,000 sq. ft. retail building. Torcon’s contract included demolition of an existing 500-car garage on the site. Midway through construction, the existing garage had a structural failure and was closed. Torcon successfully expedited construction of the new facility, delivering 400 spaces fully seven months ahead of schedule and the entire garage five months ahead of schedule.
