Torcon was the CM for renovation of the lower floors and exterior façade of the former Newark Central King High School. We provided comprehensive preconstruction services for the phase project, which began with exterior façade renovations of the 1912 building and full interior demolition.
The project scope included renovation of a 128,000 sq. ft. of space on the lower floors to create classrooms, lecture halls, faculty offices, gathering spaces, study spaces and exhibit space in which student projects can be viewed and demonstrated. The exterior brick façade of the 1912 building was repaired and a new roof was installed for both the original 1912  building and the 1969 addition.  The 1969 building, which housed a gymnasium and pool, was completely gutted, including the façade, and renovated to become the home of the recently-established New Jersey Innovation Institute.
The Central King Building has been transformed into a hub for STEM education and research at NJIT, as well as a central spot for group study and collaboration. Additional improvements completed under the project include landscaping and concrete pavers, as well as new entrances to the building from three city streets.
