The project required the renovation of two levels of a three-story occupied clinical manufacturing building, including relocation of two critical BMS operations groups. The PD facility is occupied by more than 100 people involved in biopharmaceutical R&D and process operations. The project created innovative general and instrument labs; specialty labs for material characterization and compaction; a process development suite; and 15 process rooms for working with potent compounds. The work also included a mechanical penthouse; replacement of the building façade; and installation of new windows.
In addition to smaller, more varied, and more open settings for office tasks, scientists work in newly designed research groups: the four general laboratories and two specialty labs are large, shared, and flexible, with more than 1,700-square-feet each. The general laboratories have 160 lineal feet of bench in each laboratory and each pair shares an instrument laboratory. The specialty laboratories (material characterization and compaction) are large, flexible, work rooms with portable equipment that can be reconfigured as needs change. BMS’s use of shared space not only promotes collaboration but reduces the number of labs, instruments and supplies.
