Torcon will oversee construction of a new 200,000 sq. ft. wellness and events center at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) in Newark, New Jersey. The multi-purpose facility will provide the campus community with a modern space for athletic activities, entertainment events, convocations and professional meetings.
The state-of-the-art athletic facilities will include a 10,000 sq. ft. indoor turf area, an 8-lane, 25-yard swimming pool with accompanying diving well, running track and racquetball/squash courts. The 3,500 seat Convocation Center will host concession stands, the team store, athletic department offices, and offer both basketball and volleyball team facilities. In addition, students will be able to enjoy exercise classrooms, extensive weight training equipment, a two court gymnasium and locker room facilities.
Designed and engineered by AECOM, more than half of the dynamic center will be dedicated to multipurpose use, allowing the school to host conferences large enough to accommodate 4,000 attendees.
Over the past four decades, NJIT has increased enrollment by 70%, transforming the school from a commuter college to a nationally ranked public research university. The wellness and events center will match NJIT’s momentum of growth by creating an enhanced on-campus experience for thousands of students, educators, fans, spectators and more.
Torcon will provide comprehensive construction management services for the multi-purpose facility that is scheduled to open to the public in March of 2017.
