San Juan, Puerto Rico
53,000 sq. ft.
San Jorge Children's Hospital is considered the best private children's hospital in Puerto Rico. In 2012, Torcon completed construction of a 53,000 sq. ft., four-story expansion to the Hospital in San Juan. The project provides new and larger emergency and admissions areas, pediatric intensive care units, and additional beds.
The expansion included the following clinical areas:
Pediatric Emergency Care Department
A totally new Pediatric Emergency Care Department was added on the first floor, with access from the Hospital’s entry plaza and the lobby area, and with direct access for ambulances. The new facility is patient-focused, offering a safe waiting area with play areas, privacy, and comfortable facilities. San Jorge provides admissions, fast-track care, and primary physician examination in the new PEC facility, along with respiratory care, 33-patient rooms for examination, and dedicated treatment areas for cardiology, orthopaedics and trauma, and isolation and decontamination rooms.
New Private Rooms
The project added 22 single-patient rooms in the Pediatric Oncology Unit designed under the “protected environment” code, in which the air conditioning system has built-in HEPA filters that maintain a sterile and clean environment. The unit’s lobby features a gallery showing works of art from patients, a game room, a laundry, a theater, and a roof-top outdoor play area.
Sixteen beds were also added in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, with space for parents to stay 24 hours a day. The PICU also includes a bone marrow transplantation unit.
Following construction, more than 50% of the beds at San Jorge Children’s Hospital are single rooms.
An area on the second floor is dedicated to Ambulatory Surgery. It is a more expansive and efficient design than the previous department, and includes both pre-operative and post-operative care areas.
