Construction Management

Torcon is CM for the lower floors and exterior renovation of the former Newark Central King High School. Preconstruction services for the project started in the fall of 2014 and were completed May of 2015. Construction activities began in January of 2015  with exterior façade renovations of the 1912 building.  Interior demolition began in May 2015; targeting a final construction completion date of December 2016.
The project scope includes a 128,000 sq. ft. renovation of the lower floors of the Central King Building to create classrooms, lecture halls, faculty offices, gathering spaces, study spaces and exhibit space in which student projects can be viewed and demonstrated. The exterior brick façade of the 1912 building is being repaired and a new roof will be installed for both the original 1912  building and the 1969 addition.  The 1969 building, which currently houses a gymnasium and pool, will be completely gutted, including the façade, and renovated to become the home of the recently-established New Jersey Innovation Institute.

Once renovated, the Central King Building will be transformed into a hub for STEM education and research, at NJIT. Groups to be hosted in the new facility include—

  • Center for Innovation and Discovery
  • Biological Sciences, Education and Research Center
  • Teaching Effectiveness Institute
  • Math Engagement Center
  • Composition Engagement Center
  • Centers for advising and pre-professional mentoring

Additional improvements to be completed under the project include landscaping and concrete pavers, as well as new entrances to the building on Summit St., New St., and MLK Blvd.
